Pannett Art Gallery Whitby: an honest heritage stay
Start at Pannett: art, fossils and a very Whitby collection
Pannett Art Gallery is my favourite starting point for this heritage trail: admission is free, and its changing exhibitions sit alongside work by the Weatherill family and the Staithes Group. The gallery shares Pannett Park with Whitby Museum, where the story widens to include huge ichthyosaur fossils, intricate Whitby jet carvings and objects from the town's maritime and scientific past. Allow around 1.5-2 hours for the museum and gallery together; the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, with last admission at 16:00. I like this pairing because it gives the town's art and working history equal weight (rather than trying to make one museum do everything).
🌿 The park adds trails, a Jurassic garden and a floral clock, so it's an easy place to stretch a museum visit into a half-day.

A garden and parking for a museum-first day
For the Pannett Art Gallery visit, Berry Banks Cottage is 1.7 km from the gallery, making it a useful base for combining the collection with a walk through the town. (I'd still leave room in the day for an unplanned museum detour.)

from £53Berry Banks Cottage is a three-bedroom holiday home with a fully equipped kitchen, washing machine, private garden and seating area. Free WiFi and on-site private parking are included, useful if you're balancing a gallery visit with time elsewhere in Whitby (I am very capable of overpacking for a short stay). Cottage details.
Grape Lane: where Cook's Whitby story begins
On the East Side, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum occupies the 1688 house of shipowner John Walker. James Cook arrived here in 1746, aged 17, to begin his seaman's apprenticeship; the displays follow his life from Whitby to the great voyages, with original voyage art and portraits. I'd make time for the house as well as the famous name: it connects a local apprenticeship to a much larger maritime history. Allow about 1-1.5 hours. In November 2026, the museum's hours are Tuesday and Thursday, 11:00-15:00; its seasonal volunteer tours are on Tuesdays at 11:00 and 12:00 with booking.

An East Side base for Cook and the abbey
For the Captain Cook Memorial Museum and Whitby Abbey, Pegasus Cottage is roughly 2 km from Pannett Art Gallery, estimated from its listed 500 m distance to the abbey. It places you on the East Side for the older maritime streets and headland (I'd tackle the steep part before my legs stage a protest).
Pegasus Cottage
from £9289.6 Exceptional · 13 reviews
Pegasus Cottage has two bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, garden with sea views, free WiFi and free on-site private parking. Captain Cook Memorial Museum is just a few steps away, Whitby Abbey is 500 m away, and the beach is a seven-minute walk away. That makes it a particularly handy base for linking Cook's story with the East Cliff (I'd plan those stops before heading back across town). Hotels near Pannett Art Gallery.
The abbey, the church and the climb I wouldn't rush
Whitby Abbey is the headline stop on the headland: its 13th-century church ruins belong to a Benedictine community founded after the Norman Conquest, while the site's history reaches back to Hild's monastery and the Synod of 664. The visitor centre adds archaeological finds, reconstructions and an audio guide. Give the ruins about 1.5 hours with the exhibition, then continue to St Mary's Church and the 199 Steps if you have the energy. The steps climb from Church Street to the church and abbey; Caedmon's Trod is another stepped route, while the Horse Road avoids steps. Winter hours are Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00-16:00 through 20 December 2026.
St Mary's is worth entering, not just passing: its box pews, galleries and three-decker pulpit make a striking contrast with the open abbey ruins. The churchyard also links the headland to Bram Stoker's Whitby chapters in Dracula.

A roomy home for an abbey-and-harbour itinerary
For Whitby Abbey, Keel House is 1.3 km from the site; for Pannett Art Gallery, allow roughly 2 km by town walk, an estimate based on those listed local distances. (I've learned not to plan a full day around my optimistic walking pace.)
Keel House
from £2379.4 Superb · 10 reviews
Keel House has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, sea views, a fully equipped kitchen and a garden. A washing machine, dishwasher, walk-in shower, free WiFi and private parking round out the practical details; Whitby Beach is a 19-minute walk away. It suits a longer heritage visit when you want room to regroup between the abbey, harbour and town (I'm a fan of having a kitchen after a day of walking). Property details ↗.
Follow the harbour's working history to the West Cliff
The River Esk is more than a dividing line: the Swing Bridge links Whitby's East and West Sides, and the piers and lighthouses mark the harbour entrance. On the West Cliff, the Whale Bone Arch commemorates the town's whaling past, while the nearby Captain Cook statue honours the seafarer whose career began here. I'd walk this stretch as a sequence of maritime memorials rather than treating each as a quick photo stop. The annual Whitby Regatta brings yacht and rowing races, free entertainment and a fireworks finale across the harbour; the 2027 event is scheduled for 14-16 August.
The old town adds another strand: Church Street, Sandgate, Henrietta Street and Grape Lane grew around fishing and jet-working communities. The historic streets and independent jet shops make a useful link back to the objects in Pannett Museum.

A central base for crossing between the two sides
For the gallery and maritime trail, Foresters House is roughly 1.5 km from Pannett Art Gallery by town walk, an estimate based on its stated 600 m distance to Whitby Abbey. It also puts the beach within a seven-minute walk (I'd keep the harbour crossing in mind when sketching out the day).

Whitby Beach is a seven-minute walk away and the abbey is 600 m from the property, which makes it a practical base for splitting time between the East Cliff and West Side (I'd be tempted to give each side its own half-day). Keep the final heritage loop flexible
One route I'd happily take is the West Cliff to East Cliff walk: start around Royal Crescent and the Whale Bone Arch, head down to the harbour, cross the Swing Bridge, then continue through the old town to Tate Hill Sands, St Mary's and the abbey. The route is about 1.5 km and takes roughly 1-1.5 hours before museum stops. Stoker stayed on the West Cliff in 1890, and his Whitby trail ties the lodging, the wreck site and churchyard to the novel. Whitby Goth Weekend, held twice yearly around the May bank holiday and Halloween, grew from that Dracula connection; expect the old town to be busy.
