Cheap Hotels Near Gordon Square, London: My Honest Guide to 5 Budget Bases

Cheap Hotels Near Gordon Square, London: My Honest Guide to 5 Budget Bases

Honest admission first: none of the five budget places below is actually on Gordon Square. I checked, then checked again (squinting the way I used to read platform boards at 5 a.m. as a conductor out of Sheffield), and trust me, I'd rather tell you now than have you find out with a rucksack on. What I can give you is five bases in five different parts of London, each with a straight trade-off, plus what to do around Bloomsbury and beyond. Pick the zone that fits your plans first, then the bed.

Gordon Square, Bloomsbury and the Worst Hotel Booking I Ever Made

My worst booking: I once chose the cheapest bed in a city without checking which end of the line it sat on (I saved a little on the room and spent it back on forty-minute rides, twice a day). So here is the lesson. Gordon Square sits in Bloomsbury, London's quarter of Georgian squares, alongside Bedford and Russell, near the British Museum, University College London and Senate House. In the early 20th century the area gave its name to the Bloomsbury Group of Virginia Woolf, E. M. Forster and John Maynard Keynes. Trust me, you can do an astonishing amount here on foot, and that's the whole argument for staying close.

A Bloomsbury Morning: Museums, Manuscripts and One Honest Queue

The British Museum is free and holds around eight million objects, and honestly you'll see a sliver of them (I tried for a full day once and finished on a bench). Aim for the Rosetta Stone and the Egyptian galleries, which are always crowded, and go at opening or late afternoon. A free timed ticket helps, and because the Western Range rebuild is phased, check your must-see gallery is open. Then, trust me, try Sir John Soane's Museum: free, Wednesday to Sunday, walk-in, about five minutes from Holborn, with Hogarth's A Rake's Progress inside. Leave big bags behind.

Stay One: The Euston Road Side for Regent's Park, Oxford Street and a Gig

North of the squares, the Euston Road side opens up Regent's Park and the free Wallace Collection in Marylebone (Bond Street or Baker Street are the stations). Oxford Street goes traffic-free between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street from 26 October 2026, which is lovely for browsing and, confession, hopeless for guessing where your bus now stops. Music fans: Leo Kottke plays 229 on Great Portland Street on 6 June 2027. Trust me, a base here beats a far-flung bargain every time.

Yha London Central

from £18

8.2 Very Good · 4124 reviews

Stay here for the Regent's Park and Oxford Street side; you trade a private room for a hostel bunk. Yha London Central is a 5-minute walk from Great Portland Street Tube, 6 minutes from Regent's Park and 9 from Oxford Street, with a bar, snack bar, luggage storage, a lift and lockers in the bunk dorms. Some dorms are en suite, the rest share showers, and private rooms exist too. (I always grab a lower bunk and still bang my head.) The café's croissants, paninis and pasties are bought, not included, so budget for them. Read about budget beds near Great Portland Street.

The West End After Dark (and the Worst Theatre Ticket Ever)

Theatre is where my budget plans go to die (I once paid walk-up price for a seat behind a pillar). Listed dates: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - One Part Show at the Palace Theatre on 3 November 2026; Matilda, Billy Elliot, Hadestown and Magic Mike Live (18+) on 19 May 2027; SIX and Paddington the Musical on 26 May 2027. For cheaper seats use the official tkts booth in Leicester Square, never a tout.

Stay here for the West End; you trade a private room for shared bathrooms with showers. Astor Oxford Street is an 8-minute walk from Piccadilly Circus and 13 from the National Gallery, with Trafalgar Square 1.2 km away and Buckingham Palace 1.9 km. Westminster, the Abbey and an Underground Bunker

Westminster suits people who like history lived-in. Westminster Abbey takes sightseers Monday to Saturday only (Sundays are worship, which I forgot once and queued for nothing); book ahead, and the roughly 90-minute verger tour is English-only and capped at 20 people. Nearby, the Churchill War Rooms are where staff worked in basement rooms from 1939; the Map Room lights were switched off in August 1945 and the rooms left largely as they were. Timed tickets sell out. Changing the Guard in autumn 2026 is listed for Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 11:00 and Sundays at 10:00. Check the day's calendar, never take my word on running times.

Chester Hotel

from £42
2 stars

Stay here for Victoria and the palace side; you trade hostel buzz for a quiet residential street. Chester Hotel is a family-run Georgian town house 3 minutes from Victoria Station, with Buckingham Palace about 15 minutes away on foot and Westminster Cathedral under 10. Private en-suite rooms come with tea and coffee, digital TV and free high-speed WiFi; there is a 24-hour reception, daily room service and free parking on weekends and weekday evenings. (Ex-conductor confession: I still book beds by platform.) Victoria has the Gatwick Express, so ask the ticket office which service is running that day. Official site ↗

The South Bank Without the Crowds I Promised Myself

The riverside walk from Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge takes about an hour at a stroll (mine took three, thanks to snacks). Tate Modern's collection is free, and Shakespeare's Globe runs a guided tour of about 90 minutes. Board HMS Belfast to see the mess decks and engine rooms of a cruiser that served in the Arctic convoys (steep ladders, so not for everyone), or visit the free IWM London on Lambeth Road. The London Eye rotation takes about 30 minutes, and you should expect a queue even with a timeslot. The Southbank Centre Winter Market opens from 2 November 2026.

Publove @ The Steam Engine,Waterloo

from £13

7.3 Good · 3124 reviews

Stay here for the South Bank; you trade privacy for mixed dorms of 6 to 18 beds. Publove @ The Steam Engine sits above a traditional pub on a quiet side street, 10 minutes' walk from Waterloo Station and within 20 minutes of the Southbank, the London Eye and Westminster Abbey. It offers free bed linen, a free security locker, free luggage storage, free walking tours, a bar open 24 hours and shared bathrooms on each floor. Lambeth North on the Bakerloo line is the nearest Tube. (Sleeping over a pub, I tell myself I'm a light sleeper; I am not.) Booking.com page ↗

East End Sunday: Brick Lane, Spitalfields and Columbia Road

Come on a Sunday: Brick Lane, Old Spitalfields Market and Columbia Road's flower market all peak then, and Beigel Bake's salt beef bagel is the famous finish (I once ate one standing in the rain, joyfully). Fournier Street's Huguenot weavers' houses are a short stroll away. Dennis Severs' House opens by candlelight from 20 November 2026 to 10 January 2027; book. Sky Garden is free but must be booked, and one visitor lift was out of service in October 2026, so rebook if you're flexible. Liverpool Street has the Elizabeth line and the Stansted Express.

St Christopher'S Liverpool Street

from £19

7.9 Good · 1464 reviews

Stay here for the East End; you trade Bloomsbury's calm for a livelier, barrier-free walk to Brick Lane. St Christopher'S Liverpool Street is 900 metres from Brick Lane and from Hoxton Square, with London Bridge 1.4 km away. It has a restaurant and bar, free WiFi, breakfast, air conditioning, a 24-hour front desk, luggage storage and a designated smoking area. (I always say I'll skip the bar, then don't.) Trust me, Sunday mornings here are the reason to book. Tripadvisor reviews ↗

When to Come: The Dates I'd Plan Around

Check each organiser, because I never quote a day's running as fixed. The London Museum opens at West Smithfield on Saturday 28 November 2026. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland runs from 19 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Christmas Day has no Tube, buses or trains at all (I've stood on a silent platform, and it's eerie). The London Marathon spreads over two days, 24 and 25 April 2027, and hotels get pricier. Big nights at the O2, reachable by Uber Boat to North Greenwich, include Korn on 4 November 2026 and Noah Kahan on 13 November.

The Question Passengers Always Asked Me Down the Carriage

'Which stop for the British Museum?' Tottenham Court Road, Holborn, Russell Square or Goodge Street all serve it. At King's Cross St Pancras, ask the ticket office or information desk for the day's running, as I won't promise a connection.

Be honest about the trade-off, stay near what you came for, and trust me, you won't want to leave. Prices and availability can change, so confirm when booking.
